Jack London has always been one of my favorite authors. I still remember the first time I read Call of the Wild. Not only did it mesmerize me, I wanted to be Buck. I think I was around 11 or 12. I became obsessed with sled dogs and the Iditarod. I remember telling my family that one day, 'when I was old enough' I'd enter the race. While that hasn't happened, I'm still enthralled by Mr. London's writing.

Of course, White Fang made me want to adopt a wolf. That didn't happen either, but I kept up with the reading. Although I loved the novels, I think London was really a master of the short form. His short stories are amazing. To Build a Fire is a true classic, and to this day my heart quickens alongside the man's as he struggles with the cold. London is able to turn nature into not just a force to be reckoned with, but also another character. A cunning, cruel character that forgives no mistake. The cold is never more palpable than in this struggle.

While I am given to verbosity, London's best work hovers around 7,500 words or less. He described savagery and nature economically. Yet few could write as evocatively.

Jacket:UNIQLO Shirt:Koto/UrbanOutfitters Denim:A.P.C.

I know, this place's been all about photo safaris and my stuff lately, but I'm on a mountain in the middle of China, give me a break. I've been feeling UNIQLO lately. This jacket is a perfect transitional jacket. It's got a removable quilted liner-which extends its use as a light rain shell to a fairly decent Fall and early Winter jacket. With the right layers, it's apropos for quite a few occasions. I found the chambray buried in a rack of flannels and skittle flavored hoodies one day wandering through the local Urban Outfitters this summer. I've never heard of Koto, but I like the shirt and the pocket details. Don't worry, I only have 2 chambray shirts.

Doesn't it look like I'm thoughtfully considering the beauty of nature and how small a speck in this great universe I really am? Yeah, too bad I just misjudged the ten second timer on my camera.

Today is Halloween on Moganshan. Not that this is really a costume at all. Actually, it's my best impression of Thom Browne. This is the other jacket I bought in Hong Kong a few weeks back (has it really been 2 months?) from Uniqlo. I picked the trousers up in Osaka after drooling over similar styles at BEAMS and Ciaopanic. I never was the biggest fan of cropped trousers, but the Japanese won me over. I'm still not sure how girls feel about them, but I doubt that feelings are too negative, right?

I can't really say how much I like, no strike that, love my gear from The Hill-Side. The tie is amazing and has held up to 2 plus months of travel and my not always so delicate packing style. It works with jeans and an untucked shirt as well as a blazer/trouser combo for more formal moments. The bandanna, which I've folded into a pocket square here, is great. Still haven't seen a shade quite like the plum chambray. Plus, whenever I get the urge to rob a bank, I have the perfect mask. If you're going to steal someone's money, you should at least be well dressed.

Today, my sister took us out on a little hike. She showed us this cool abandoned building (what abandoned buildings aren't cool?) that was once owned by a family of Russian ex-pats here on the mountain.

After exploring for a few minutes, we noticed some items scattered in the debris inside. "Those are cool bottles..." we all said. After a few moments, I went for them. I know, I know, not so kosher to take from an abandoned house, but still, I figure we can call it 'salvaging' and it's okay, right? I'll show you the bottle I snagged when it's cleaned up and on display in my apartment.

Dispatches from a little trip from Shanghai, to Hangzhou, and back to the mountain. The steak with the sizzling stones was amazing. I know of a good place if you're ever in Hangzhou. Oh and don't pretend to pull the brake lever for a photo for a blog-train security doesn't take too kindly.

A few more 'just because' items for your girl. Small, cute, but not overly cutesy gifts that make her smile. I don't know where Sonia finds this stuff, but I guarantee it'll score you some points.

Is your girl an accountant? Is she really organised? Get her the Abacus Pendant. That way she can keep track of all the sweet, gentlemanly things you do for her during the day. Like always walking between her and the street.

The Geode Skull Pendant is a pretty awesome necklace. Just make sure you give it to a pretty awesome girl. It'd be wasted on anyone else. The fact that the skull is a Day of the Dead skull makes it even cooler.

The Jade Pipe Pendant is my favorite. I've been in China/Asia for over two months now and haven't seen something as cool as this. This pendant is for the girl who can talk about Truffaut and The Hangover in the same sentence and wears five inch heels just as easily as Air Force Ones. Plus when you guys get bored, she could totally serenade you with it.

I picked up this hat in Osaka from a small hat shop on the walk back to the hotel one day. Obviously, I'm a big fan of driving caps. And I have quite a few of them. What I didn't have was one made in heavy, sweatshirt material cotton. Grey and sweatshirt cotton-sold and sold. The Obey shirt and New Standards are holding up to China well.The real surprise here is I got new specs!

I went for an oval shape. Kind of an impulse buy, I wandered into the glasses shop in the small city at the base of the mountain one night with my sister. She told me before that glasses could be had at pretty amazing prices. A quick eye exam, 45 minutes, and 45 dollars later and here we are. I went for the oval shaped frames. That way I can look like a distinguished architect or modern artist, no? That or the goofy guy with funny shaped glasses. Either way I'm into it.

This is my Serpico look. Fall is finally starting to hit the mountain here. Not cold enough for a full blown sweater or jacket, more of a good excuse to wear a new hat. I pass this telephone booth on my walks quite a bit (it's on the way to the cafe/restaurant my sister manages). Don't see phone booths anymore, so I had to take a few shots here. While I'm not testifying against dirty cops or going undercover, if I ever manage to look half as steezy as Frank Serpico, I would be a happy man. So grab your .45, a peacoat, and go handle some business.

I found dace on Max's (from AllPlaidout) inspiration board WellPlaid. He posted the picture of the Martin dress, actually. Curious, I clicked the link and discovered a whole new designer and label. Based out of Vancouver, Canada, Dace Moore has been in business for herself since 2002. dace is one of the more complete lines I've seen in womenswear. The styling for the online shop is amazing and I think I am more than slightly in love with the model, or any girl that dresses like this (is that creepy?). Seriously, though. Peep the shoe game for these looks.

The Martin dress may be my favorite, although it's hard to say. I think it's the front pockets that seals the deal for me.

Coming up second is the Penner dress. Simply pretty, no?

The Mendes shorts are pretty awesome.When guys think about girls in shorts, I like to think we all think of shorts like this, not daisy dukes-but maybe that's just a character flaw of mine. These are just a few of the looks that caught my eye. I really think the shirting is spot on as well. From the shirts to the outerwear, dace has got your girl covered.

I think snoozerloser and dace combined could dress my dream girl. I don't know what she looks like or where she's from, but I know she has good taste in clothes.

Freemans Sporting Club does a lot of things right. The food, the barbershop, and the clothing are all spot on. Fall is here and Winter is just around the corner. Be prepared. Everyone needs a good solid suit for the colder months. And there's nothing like a three piece Donegal grey suit, right ladies? Handmade in New York from 100% deadstock English Donegal, this could easily be the only Fall/Winter suit you need..

The Machinist shirt is another gem from Freemans. Short loomed Japanese cotton paired with Italian mother of pearl buttons makes it an obvious choice for adding to your closet. The button on the upper sleeve to keep it rolled up for doing all that hard work we do is a great detail.

Don't fall into thinking you can only wear a suit as nice as this formally. I'd even wear it with the Machinist shirt and those Alden Roy boots from Context for a nice look.

The changing seasons haven't gone unnoticed by yours truly. Solid parkas are a necessity where I'm from and often times have little to do with style. Survival is key when you're trudging to school in February, dodging snowballs, and trying not to slip on ice covered sidewalks. A good parka helps you enjoy the beauty that is winter. Living in the midwest has garnered me quite the collection over the years of nylon, quilted, and down stuffed parkas. That doesn't mean I don't notice a good thing when I see it.

The first photo is part of the amazing Nigel Cabourn collection. Inspired by the first ascent of Everest, Mr. Cabourn's collection is as meticulously constructed as it is aesthetically appealing. The Mountain Rucksack Parka is certainly one of my favorites this season. I love wool and the hop-sack style wool outer is choice. The term 'investment piece' is bandied about a lot these days, but I do think that this is such a piece. I especially love the built in rucksack on the back in a contrast color. Check out Oi Polloi for more detailed shots.

The second jacket is the CW Corona Parka from Woolen Mills by Woolrich. This is probably one of the more perfect parkas I've seen in awhile. The knee length helps cut down on wintry winds, while the fur lined canvas outer keeps you warm and dry. I also really like that the lining is removable-I always end up wearing the lining of parkas a lot. Also available at Oi Polloi.

So grab yourself a good coat and go snowshoeing this winter-it's a great way to enjoy a fresh blanket of snow...

SnoozerLoser has quickly become my go-to for cool stuff for girls. There's always a hint of whimsy mixed with an edge that makes you know it was designed for really, really cool girls. Girls that are out of our leagues, but somehow deign us worthy of their time. To thank her for such magnanimity, how about something from the Fall/Winter collection?

The Lydia cotton shift is a classic silhouette and would be perfect for any date you could dream up. Plus it has studs. I think girls like studs. The fact that a big inspiration (and the namesake) come from Beetlejuice makes it even more perfect. Especially if your girl is, to quote Lydia Deetz "...strange and unusual...". (trust me, girls who are strange and unusual make the best girlfriends)

The Veruca Pepper Hoodie is one of my favorites. It instantly makes me think of that girl you see strolling down the street that you never, ever forget. Girls-pair this with raw skinny denim and I promise all boys will swoon.

The skull necklace is amazing. The fact that it's real bone makes it even that much better. This is the necklace you get when clearly, she's cooler than you. She liked Joe Strummer way before everyone else, can drink more than you, and yet she still holds your hand in the most delicate manner ever.

Remember when I said that all I needed were the perfect pair of boots and I'd be set for a fall uniform? Well I found them. Ciaopanic to the rescue! If you come to Detroit, or I'm around your parts, this is probably what you'll see me wearing. Substitute a flannel and I'm pretty sure this will work for all but the coldest days.

I've had my eye on Fjallraven's kanken rucksack for awhile now and when I saw them at Opening Ceremony in Shibuya, I couldn't resist. Can you tell I like the color green?

The boots in a little more detail. I love crepe souls, so obviously when I saw these, I was sold. The thick sole is super comfortable and I like the sand suede. I may switch the laces to red, but other than that, I wouldn't change a thing.

These bags are really versatile and have been around forever. My favorite feature is how the shoulder straps can be cinched tight and snapped in place, making the bag a tote rather than a rucksack. Perfect for running around the city, a day hike in the bamboo forest, or packing lunch for that picnic you've been meaning to take her on. Don't want to fly to New York or Tokyo to buy it? I love shopping in Japan. Worldwide retailers please take note- a friendly smile and smart packaging goes a long way.

I had been looking forward to stopping in United Arrows when I started planning this trip. It's kind of like Barney's or BEAMS, only slightly more affordable. They carry suiting to Red Wings. I also scored hipster points when, while I was checking out their collection of stuff from The Hill-Side, the clerk noticed my bandanna and gave me a thumbs up. We chatted about where the fabrics came from and then I noticed this hat.

Made in the U.S.A. and sold in Japan. Sigh. It's a 100% wool watch cap built to military spec. I figured it'd be perfect for any Serpico moments I might have. I love olive drab and I thought it'd go well with the vest I nabbed from Ciaopanic.

Is it weird that when I saw the blackwatch plaid lining I thought of AllPlaidout?

I'm a sucker for gray and for wool. Combine the two into a slim fitting, down-filled quilted vest and I'm sold. Ciaopanic does a nice job of taking workwear and outdoor gear inspiration without going full on repro. This vest is going to get a ton of wear this fall/winter.

I know, I know. When I got the Edwin 503s I said I was set for denim. And I was. But when the Levis store in Shinjuku is having a 50% off sale, you don't think twice. Especially when it applies to 501s modeled after the 1937 model. Raw and selvage, these are Levis that are really hard to get a hold of back home. I love the suspender buttons.

I also love the cinch buckle on the back. Wool watch cap, wool vest, raw denim- all I need is the perfect pair of boots and my F/W uniform is basically complete. What are you guys wearing this fall?

Greetings from Tokyo! This street is about a five minute walk from my hotel in shinjuku. The lights, sounds, and people are amazing here. Not speaking any Japanese at all (not that I speak a great deal of cantonese), I've had to rely on the kindness of strangers to navigate. And everyone, I mean everyone, has been more than helpful and patient. From people telling me the fare for the subway, to the guy at BEAMS walking me to BEAMS T, rather than just showing me on my map (he did have a chuckle when I showed him the superfuture map-I think he sees it a lot); everyone is super nice here.

At first I thought it was funny that Mr. Lee Jones would endorse coffee. Then I tried it. It is boss. Iced coffee is my new vice, I think. Good thing there's vending machines all over the place...

Ciaopanic is probably the greatest surprise (shopping wise) here in Japan. I never heard of the store/brand before, but it's great. Much more affordable than most of the big names here, Ciaopanic does a great job of mixing workwear, streetwear, and functional gear. I don't really understand the name, but I do like the clothes. If you stay tuned, I might even show you what I bought.

Can you tell I like bamboo? The views are amazing and being able to touch bamboo this thick is pretty neat. I've been trying to run or walk around at least for an hour or so for the past few days and it's criminal how little I've seen of the mountain. Everything from waterfalls to koi ponds are at my doorstep. If you get the chance, come visit Monganshan-I know a pretty cool pastry chef/manager of a really nice coffee shop/restaurant (and it's not just 'cause she's my sister)...

To the clothes:

Jeans are the Edwin 503s I got back in Hong Kong. It's crazy how one wash makes such a difference. These are much softer than the A.P.C.s. I do really like the red selvage. I'm leaving for Osaka and Tokyo on Wednesday and now that I have Edwins, I'll fit in right?

The shirt is a Dior shirt I've had since high school. No, I didn't buy a Dior shirt just to wear to school-a friend of my mom's gave me a ton of shirts they had laying around when they heard I had to wear them as part of my uniform. I always liked this one and have kept it in rotation ever since.

You can see The Hill-Side bandanna peeking out-it's really come in handy on this trip. Plus, with the mustache, when I wear it around my neck I totally kind of look like a real train robber. Can't beat that.

And of course Clarks desert treks. The crepe sole is really comfy, especially on all the stone steps here on the mountain. I think I'm going to grab a pair of luggers while I'm here too. You can never have enough Clarks, can you?

My sister lives and works on a mountain that is full of bamboo forests and tea fields. It's beautiful here and on a lot of levels, I could stay here forever. Tons of photo opportunities and time to just get away. The only real challenge? Trying not to look goofy to the locals while you're taking pictures of yourself amongst the bamboo.

Details: the driving cap that's so old the label fell out. Tie by The Hill-Side. The shirt is from Rogues Gallery out of Portland, Maine. Jeans are my A.P.C. New Standards. Breaking in nicely, I think. Blazer by Uniqlo. This is one of the two I picked up while I was in Hong Kong. Super light, it's perfect for that 'expat living in China look'. I know I should have tucked in my shirt, especially since I bothered with a tie and jacket, but you try and hike up a mountain with a silly mustache and we'll see if your shirt stays tucked in. At first, I was just trying to make my sister laugh (normally I have at least a five o'clock shadow or beard-but I forgot the trimmer at home and resorted to a razor). But maybe I'll keep it. I'm trying to get my travel buddies to grow ones for themselves, but so far, no dice. I think it looks like a cross between my name is earl and a mall cop.

It's no secret that I'm a giant fan of Billykirk leather goods. My cardholder has been a faithful friend all throughout my trip in China. I think the construction and aesthetic are spot on and will never go out of style. While no one can argue about the craftsmanship or quality, some may have a hard time scrounging up a few hundred bucks for a bag, even though they're totally worth it (I suggest getting into the lucrative game of blogging-we're all millionaires now, right?). Needless to say, I was surprised when I saw this Brothers Bray tote by Billykirk for Urban Outfitters. At $88, you can't really beat it. I kind of wish it dropped before I left for China; it'd be perfect. Get it for yourself or for your girl (I bet if you get it for yourself, she'll 'borrow' it for extended periods of time). Or, tell your sugar momma you really need it.

My new Warriors shoes. My sister told me about these a few months ago and I've been interested in grabbing a pair since. Evidently, they were one of the only shoes available during the height of the revolution and now they're the standard cheap shoe. You see them on everyone from teenagers to construction workers. At about a 7th of the cost of Vans, I think they're pretty awesome. I wanted white on white, but they didn't have them in my size. They did have these guys and a pair of olive green as well. I bought both and will probably buy more. I also had a pair of shoes custom made here on the mountain and am anxiously awaiting their completion. No doubt more pictures of my shoes and sexy ankles are bound to come...

Greetings from the Great Wall! I told you I'd see the cultural sites and not just spend my time shopping. The bandanna from The Hill-Side is amazing and has totally come in handy on this trip. The selvedge chambray is super soft and I love the plum violet traditional Japanese dye. This woven shirt from Obey was a pleasant surprise. I was wary of the transition from graphic arts to clothing, and to be honest, I didn't know it was from Obey when I tried it on in the store. But I've worn it quite a bit and the weight and fit is perfect for spring/summer. These camp shorts from the Gap are pretty good too. I like the exposed pocket stitching and the length is nice. These Campers have been with me all over the place and thankfully are still going strong.

Tomorrow is the Temple of Heaven and hopefully a PLA surplus store. Then on to Shanghai and hopefully Tokyo. Woo hoo! Oh and by the way, if you get the chance, come to Beijing, not for the shopping but for the duck. So good. I didn't get any pictures of it, it was too good to wait, but I promise it looked as good as it tasted.

I know Uniqlo isn't really a revelation, but I do think they do a better job (at least for guys) than H+M. Here in Beijing, there's a mall with a Muji and a Uniqlo and three floors of food courts (I told you I like to eat a lot). I really can't get over how much better the shopping is here than at home. U.S. retailers take note, pretty please? I dragged my family here and all were pleasantly surprised by the prices at Uniqlo. My sister copped some leggings (you girls like those, don't you?) and I grabbed these two jackets. The real kicker? They were only 13 dollars. 13 bucks for a jacket? I'm sold. Lightweight with a nice slim fit, these are perfect spring/summer jackets. I know summer's almost over, but here in China, it's been around 80-90 degrees everyday. Plus they were 13 dollars. You can never have enough blazers-wear them with denim (maybe those edwins I just bought) or with rolled up trousers and I guarantee girls will swoon. Well maybe not guarantee, but I bet they like it more than a hoody. I could be wrong though...

Hong Kong has some of the best shopping in the world. There are way too many places to check out in just three days (don't worry I plan on looping back through before heading back to the states). I wish malls back home were even a fraction of the quality here. After pining over Porter bags, Visvim shoes, and countless others, I spied these guys on the 4th floor of the Sogo shopping center. I was always curious about Edwin denim, but had never seen them in person.

I went for the red selvage 503s. Straight leg, one wash. Now normally, I'd say just go raw/dry, but I really liked the fit and hand of these. And they were a good deal.

The fit on these jeans is perfect. Not too tight, not baggy at all-this Goldilocks has found her porridge. I think these will definitely give my new standards a run for their money. In general, I'm not the biggest fan of pocket embroidery, but this detail isn't too much for me at all. I also like how the center back belt loop is slightly off-center.

All in all, I'd say absolutely zero buyer's remorse. My only regret? Not enough time and money for all the precious treasures I've been seeing.

Hi from Hong Kong!! After a long, but pleasantly uneventful 16 hour commute, we made it. Highlights- seeing my sister after almost a year apart, her boyfriend giving me sweet sunglasses, and wandering the Temple St. Night Market. Today's my first full day, so we'll see what happens.

My stuff: (1.) asus Eee pc-great for traveling, it's light and fast, exactly what every blogger nerd needs. (2.) Timex expedition watch-20 bucks from Target. this was a 'stay off the grass' sign I saw the last time I was in China

Although I've hinted at it in the past, I'm heading to China for the next month or so. My little sister lives outside of Shanghai and I have tons of relatives in southern China (near Guangzhou). My best friend is also coming along. It really is a trip of a lifetime. We're also planning to hit up Tokyo. While I'm dreaming of all the sick shopping in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Tokyo, don't worry; we're planning on seeing all the real historical and cultural sites as well...I promise.

I plan on writing and posting while I'm there, but if there's a longer than normal pauses between posts, it's because I'm in Asia, not because I don't love you anymore.

Hat: can't remember, Shirt: Ralph Lauren, Tie: The Hill-Side, Trousers: Lacoste, Shoes: Camper, Watch: Timex

I love driving caps. I have a pretty good collection, although I always have my eye out. I also have a soft spot for gingham.

Ralph Lauren is always a good bet for a solid shirt. It might not be the brand of the moment, but it will always fit well and last for awhile.

The Hill-Side is an amazing new company. If you're in the market for a tie, handkerchief, or bandanna, this is the place to go. The guys at The Hill-Side use sturdy, unconventional fabrics like chambray, denim, and waxed cotton which lends their ties a nice edge. I'll probably wear this indigo selvedge denim tie as much as possible. It works well with a suit, as well as with my shirt untucked. Stay tuned for an upcoming post on The Hill-Side.

I don't really have a lot of stuff from Lacoste, in fact these trousers may be the only thing I own. But I do like them. A good chocolate brown trouser is a nice alternative to khaki or navy. To roll or to cuff? I tend to roll my trousers in the summer. It's because I have sexy ankles. When you got it, flaunt it, right?

My plum selvedge chambray bandanna. This will be in my back pocket, around my neck, or folded as a pocket square every day. Can you tell I really like the Hill-Side?

Franny is normally around when I take pictures of myself. I think she was getting a little jealous. She kept shooting me the 'you actually take pictures of yourself ?' look. Charade is a great film. It's my favorite of Ms. Hepburn's work. Pairing Grant and Hepburn works well and the supporting cast is pretty amazing. The scene that'll really make you fall in love with her? When she meets up with Walter Matthau and smokes a cigarette. (check out this essay on the film)

I think Audrey is for girls, what Steve McQueen is for guys. In and out of frame her style was flawless and always effortless. I think, really, though, it was her personality that made her Audrey Hepburn. The way she spoke, the way she walked. It's ephemeral and it's why we all hope we marry girls like her.

SnoozerLoser Studio Visit

SnoozerLoser is made for the girl who you meet once, but remember for the rest of your life. Witty, charming, and beautiful, she's the girl who makes better mixtapes than you and who your friends secretly like more than you.

When I was in New York, Sonia was nice enough to let me drop by her home studio to take a peek at the work she's doing for both the upcoming fall and spring/summer lines. When I arrived, Sonia had wine and delicious chocolate treats from Oro bakery waiting. Good taste in wine and baked goods aside, Sonia is super cool. We chatted about everything from L7's onstage antics, to geology, to where she draws inspiration from.

Having really no background in the arts or design, I am utterly fascinated by the creative process. Getting to see the studio was such a treat. Talking with Sonia and looking around her space, it quickly became apparent that SnoozerLoser is a natural extension of Sonia and her sensibilities. Rather than blabber on about how nice and gracious Sonia is, or how well done SnoozerLoser is, I'll let the pictures do the talking.

Make sure to stop by the snoozerloser store and grab your girl (or girls, grab yourself) something awesome. It's the stuff that makes you look cool without looking like your trying. Thanks again, Sonia.

capsule show: Folk

Folk was by far my favorite of the Capsule Show. Founded in 2001 by Cathal McAteer, Folk has made a name for itself with quality, understated, casual menswear. Based in the U.K., I didn't really know much about the company other than they were attending the show. Needless to say I was blown away. In a sea of workwear inspired labels, Folk stood out with simple, classic pieces. Amazing attention is paid to even the smallest detail.

Every season a signature pattern is worked into almost every garment. It shows up in the chunky knit sweaters to the lining of shirts and jackets. The key to Folk's success is in not overdoing the little details and touches.

This quilted jacket was my favorite of Folk's offerings and of the show overall. The material is a soft cotton that has been waterproofed. Inspired by old life jackets, the zipper has a rescue whistle attached. Folk mixes a sense of humor with quality construction and materials-something very difficult to pull off without the garments becoming costumey or cliched.

I will have this jacket. Another detail I loved (besides the color and the quilting) were these shoulder handles. Handles on the shoulder you ask?

The handles are so your buddy can pull you out of the water. If there's one jacket I buy in the next few months, seriously, it'll probably be this one. Too bad I have to wait so long for it to come to shops.

I love the palette of this collection. The staples remain classic colors, while the details and some of the sweaters stand out in bright relief. I would wear every piece shown in this section of the lookbook. I love their shirts. From a little twist on the plackets to contrast lining which gets shown when the sleeves are rolled up, the details really set the shirts a part.

Finding a clothing label that doesn't take itself too seriously while remaining meticulous about construction and fit is a hard thing to do. Folk's probably my new favorite label. How can you not like a label that uses playmobil toys in their lookbook?

I've been admiring the work of the brothers Bray from afar for quite some time now. Hand made leather goods in large part produced by Amish craftsmen in Pennsylvania, Billykirk bags and wallets look amazing. Being able to feel the leather and the stitching made me want something even more.

Being primarily a leathermaking outfit, I was nicely surprised when I spied these duffels at their booth.

Heavy duty waxed canvas and strong, sturdy zippers make these duffels a must have for when you need to disappear for a few days.

My favorite was this olive green. Like all of their products, these bags will only get cooler and better looking with age and abuse. Throw it in the back of your car and let your girl borrow it.

The perfect size for the gym as well as the overhead compartment. Get this and never buy another duffel again.

Billykirk teamed up with sebago to make some pretty cool shoes and boots.

These hats are classic shapes and made with classic materials. Great for that impromptu picnic that you're planning for her.

A few jerky guys have almost single handedly ruined wearing dapper pieces like these. Let's reclaim the classic hat from all those guys.

I saved my all-time favorites for last. I love the zipper wallets. I'd get the natural leather and watch how cool it got just from holding my money and staying in my pocket.

Not one of those guys who really rocks a wallet? Get the cardholder and you'll be set for life.

Billykirk makes products that you hold on to for a long time. Girls, these are things any guy will appreciate. Also, whenever I meet a girl with a cool wallet or bag (or hat) I always remember her. It's like the girl with a really cool car.

capsule show: Garbstore

Garbstore has a great reputation and whenever a new line drops, it's bound to get a ton of press. As a label, Garbstore treads that fine line between vintage-inspired and reproduction. The materials, color ways, and construction all hint at the influence, yet the pieces remain modern and relevant.

The jackets and trousers stood out as very durable options that would work well as three season gear. A lot of times labels that reference traditional garb often retain the original fitting, which is often boxier and baggier than average. The fit of the jackets and trousers are spot-on.

This was one of my favorites of the showings for spring/summer '10. The shawl collar is something I've really been liking lately. I'm happy to see a few looks incorporating the traditional collar. I also like that this cardigan is made of a heavy sweatshirt cotton. Perfect for the chilly night or as a layering piece.

Garbstore makes amazing jackets and waistcoats. I really like the shape and color of this one. The slight contrast on the underside of the collar is a nice subtle touch. These jackets feel great. The seams and buttons feel strong and the pocket placement is perfect.

This back cinch is a nice touch. It's small touches like these that kept me discovering new details throughout the show. The guys at Garbstore are picky about where their garments are carried. Which often translates to a little frustration in locating them. But if you can find it, it's great gear that will last you a long time.

capsule show: Yuketen

The Yuketen company wasn't really a surprise in terms of quality or presentation. All the gear is hand made in the U.S.A. and looks great. From moccasins, to boat shoes, to backpacks, the boys at Yuketen have got you covered. Now if they could just get some U.S. buyers to pick up more than just one or two styles. From the booth itself, it seems as if the boat shoe will be around for a few more seasons to come. And really, if you're gonna get some, why not a hand made pair?

It's no secret here that I love all things moccasin and crepe sole. So when I spotted these guys underneath the main table, I had to take a second look.

The Yuketen guys (who were really nice and more than willing to let me chat their ears off) told me these were the first model ever made at Yuketen.

I love the over sized sole and overall roughness of the shoe. They are lightweight while still feeling solid as hell. I could see myself wearing these until they completely disintegrated on my feet.

For me, these are the perfect compromise between a boat shoe and moccasin. I heard Steven Alan was looking at them, but no one could confirm whether or not they'll actually be available here in the U.S.. So if you see a pair, cop me an eleven and I'll be your best friend.

capsule show, an introduction

The Capsule show was amazing. Partly because it was an opportunity to see clothes that I've only seen on my computer screen. Mostly because the show served as a catalyst for a lot of great people to congregate in the Lower East Side of New York for four great days. Hard working, creative, generous, and kind to a fault; these guys and girls served as a great source of inspiration and energy for yours truly. A great big hello and nice to meet you (and thank you) goes out to Ryan(youhavebrokentheinternet), Max(allplaidout), Jake Davis, Sonia(snoozerloser), James(secretforts), Emil(thehill-side), Chris(folk), Raan(apolisactivism), Rogues Gallery, 3Sixteen, ContextClothing, BillyKirk, SwipeLife, and so, so many more.

Rather than put all the photos I took and my impressions in one huge post, I figured I'd start with my overall impression and then do posts on individual brands over the next few days.

Initially, I was overwhelmed when I walked through the doors. The venue (a once condemned church) was amazing and added a lot of character. The music was a tad too loud, especially since the ostensible purpose was to conduct business and allow designers and reps to talk about their labels. Other than that, the organizers did a great job-free water, booze, and the now ubiquitous energy drink were plentiful and kept everyone in fairly good moods.

Quick impressions: The workwear thing, it definitely is here to stay. Almost every company had at least a chambray shirt or hickory striped something. Best in show goes to Folk.

The opportunity to see these clothes up close really highlighted the quality and care that goes into their design and construction. I feel far more comfortable posting about and recommending them. The fact that the people behind these brands are so warm and inviting makes me even more willing to give them my money.

I'm always fascinated by the differences in perspective between men and women. Especially when it comes to fashion. I love hearing what girls like to wear and what they think is cool and then hearing the male reaction. I think a great divide may exist at points, although the evidence is entirely anecdotal.

Whenever I stumble upon an interview with a women in regards to guys and fashion they almost inevitably bring up footwear and their disdain at some of our choices. So why not go right to the source and ask a few actual girls? I figure I could talk to you guys until I'm blue in the face, but the moment a cool girl tells you, you'll listen. I asked the coolest girls in Atlanta for their take on boys and their kicks.

So, for your weekend enjoyment, a few words of advice from Lauren:

I know men get a lot of flack for their footwear, but I think, like women, men can get away with anything: gold fashion sneakers, faux-ostrich skin cowboy boots (not a personal favorite) ... you get the idea. If you are confident wearing an outlandish shoe and feel good, man, I salute you. The Sartorialist features a lot of men who do this successfully (exhibit A).

That said, I know not everyone is as fashion-obsessed as Mr. Purple Suede Loafer, so I think there are some simple guidelines you can follow:

The Good:

• Casual Shoes: desert boots, toms shoes, vans (a good alternative to loafers), boots (with long pants), oxfords/tie-ons (brown or tan) and flip-flops (if they aren't dirty and beat). I know some women would really disagree with the last one, but I for one am not scared by manly feet. In fact, I like them. If a man's toes were pedicured (i.e. prettier than mine) I would be completely weirded out. Men need their toes to breathe in the summer just like ladies and you don't have a lot of options for that (see "The Bad"). (exhibit B- you in your Clarks, Jon ;)

• Fancy dress: Keep it classic. Black with ties. Not too pointy or too blunt. An elongated, rounded toe with a matte leather or pleather can look very Cary Grant (swoon).

• Styling: For fancy dress, your pants should hit the top of your shoes without folding/creasing much at the ankle. For casual wear, in the winter make sure your pants cover your socks. In the summer, shorts go with all of your casual wear options, but (and this is a big but), your feet must be sock-less. You must go sock-less. If you don't, socks can be cruel to a man who isn't going for that professor-at-the-beach look. Socks cut off your line (shirt, shorts, leg, sock, shoe= bad) and kind of makes you look overdressed. Go sock-less with pants too. A man's ankles peeking out from under rolled pants or shorter pants is dapper- really. (exhibit C and D).

The Bad:
• Grubby old flip-flops, Birkenstocks or other leather sandals (the gladiator look only worked on men when they were being eaten by lions in a Roman coliseum), black socks with brown shoes.

The Ugly:
These are personal dislikes that some girls might be okay with. I have a strong aversion against the following: Crocs (unless you are a chef in the kitchen or watering your lawn), boat shoes and/or loafers (just looks plain pretentious to me). The worse offender? Sandals with socks. That is never okay. Are your toes cold? Wear shoes. Tevas should be hidden in the recesses of your closet until you go camping. Tevas are another reason I don't like camping.

I know it's the middle of July, but I've got fall fever. Having lived in the midwest my whole life, I've developed an addiction to sweaters and jackets. I'm pretty sure fall/winter is going to be pretty epic for the fellas this year.

This wings+horns mk2 field jacket is technically from last season. Buying last fall's gear now is a pretty good bet. Especially when that bet is as sure as a jacket from wings+horns. This is the jacket that never makes it back into the closet, it's that heavy into the rotation. Get it at blackbird.

Gitman Bros. shirts are back with a vengeance. This is my favorite from the fall collection so far. From what I hear, they're going like hot cakes already. Blackbird has them too.

The Malone pant by Woolrich is perfect if you walk even one block during the winter. Gray with a subtle check, these pants will keep you warm and look great with boots as you trudge through the snow. Plus the suspender buttons make them even cooler. Get them at various hunting/outdoor supply stores.

Russel Moccasins for J. Crew. I love all three. I guarantee these sell out insanely fast. Which ones do you guys like? I'm feeling the low tops for sure, but the buckled boot would be perfect for the snow and for motorcycle riding...

I love when people post pictures of their workspaces, homes, and stuff in their bags. It's not fair to ask without giving a little, right? What lately has been in my bag and what will most likely be in the carry-on to New York: 1. Film Art: An Introduction- Assigned for a Media Aesthetics class (my first class ever at Uni), good old Bordwell helped me sound like an uber-snob when discussing movies. Carrying it lately to brush up on some terms and film makers. 2. Monocle issue no. 25- I really enjoy this magazine. Especially because the content to advertisement ratio is very favorable (although this translates into a $10 price tag). This issue ranks the best cities to live in and surprisingly, Detroit didn't even make the discussion. 3. My glasses-Even when I wear contacts, I always carry a pair of frames. You just never know when those tricky bastards will fall out. 4. Sony Digital Voice Recorder-For all those pulitzer prize winning interviews I have coming up. 5. Cell Phone-Not everyone has an iphone... 6. Wax Cotton Fabric Samples-This is the blackwatch plaid. 7. Swiss Army Knife- no explanation necessary. 8. WWI style trench lighter-I don't smoke, but you never know when that beautiful girl will need a light. 9. My Pentax-Still going strong probably thanks to its specialized carrying case. Can you believe it all fits in here?

new york state of mind

It's official. I'm heading to New York City for the (capsule) show. From the 19th to 22nd I'll be running around the city taking photos and looking at clothing I can't afford. That and finally meeting a lot of the creative people behind my daily reads. The show will be my first official event as a member of the 'press'. I'm pretty excited. I'm also excited to see the city and all the great shops and restaurants.

Although I probably won't have time to stop in the museums, this trip, I'll probably try and at least force a few moments in at the MOMA. I grabbed this photo on my last trip when my cousin and I squeezed a trip in. I love this guy and Rothko, so I try and see their work in person whenever I can. Remember, no flashes at the museums.

Of course I'm going to go to Chinatown. I can not resist the inexorable force that pulls me towards Mott street. This is my favorite ice cream spot. We found this place when I was in high school. It was the first time I had green tea and red bean ice cream. I was hooked.

I told you I like plaid shirts on girls. Really, though, it's the seemingly effortless way she's dressed. Minimal, if any, makeup and adorable freckles. I bet she has a great accent too. I'm such a sucker for accents. I know it's a superficial thing, but I do love a girl with a good accent-be it southern, east coast, or european. I know girls say they get all dolled up for us, but I secretly think they do it because they like it. Most guys I know swoon over girls who keep it all simple. Why? Because it lets us see you and all the idiosyncrasies that help us fall in love with you. Or maybe I just read way too much into a photo of a pretty girl.

I've always been a big history buff, with my favorite subjects being the american civil war and the prohibition era gangsters. I dragged my parents on a gangland tour of Chicago when I was eight and my history projects always ranged from Capone to Frank Nitti. Tips to take home from these unscrupulous chaps: always wear a suit when you kill someone, take great mugshots, and have a cool nickname. Remember, you can't give yourself a nickname.

Machine Gun Kelly. Probably one of the cooler nicknames out there. Love the fedora and the raised eyebrow.

The Purple Gang from Detroit. While I was a big fan of Capone's southside outfit, the Purple Gang will always have a spot in my heart. I know for a fact that all guys wish they looked this cool when someone takes a picture of their crew.

I'd be remiss if I didn't throw Mr. Dillinger up there. Public enemy no. 1 certainly takes a hard mugshot, no?

Becs, the fashionable lass from Style with Benefits, asked me what the tattoo on my arm was. His name is Uncle Wiggily Longears. Howard R. Garis wrote a series of children's books starring Mr. Longears starting in 1910. My mom used to read me these stories every day. And she didn't half-ass the reading-all the characters had different voices. The voices weren't just my mom's voice in different octaves. No no no. They had accents, some were southern, others were British, and Uncle Wiggily's nurse, Nurse Jane Fuzzy Wuzzy, had a very distinctive, gravely voice. To put it mildly, I was a big fan when I was little. Finding copies of the books became a hobby for my mom, dad, and I. Everywhere we went, we always perused the local used book stores for the Uncle Wiggily books. Hence my enduring love of this place.

So when my sister and I went to get tattoos, I figured I'd get Uncle Wiggily. He was always helping people and had great advice for all the other animals in the forest. So, not only is he a good role model, he's a little tribute to my mom. (much to her chagrin)

Steven Alan girls make me melt. Get your girl the camden jumper and she'll look classy and sexy all rolled into one magnificent girl. Plus it has pockets.

Everyone needs a good trench, whether they be girl or boy. It just so happens that girls look way better in them than us. This gabardine number by coming soon will make her look like that Russian spy who convinced you to steal documents from the embassy while you were studying abroad.

I think the key to a shirt like this for girls is fitted, but not too tight. Too tight and I think it strays way too close to the 'sexy secretary' look. Mr. Alan's reverse seam shirts are perfect. Sometimes girls, it's the simple things we love about you. Like the way you look in a shirt and jeans. Or the way you roll up your sleeves. Even if we never mention it, we always notice.

I've had this hat forever. Although there are a lot of cool straw hats in the fedora and panama style, I never felt like I could pull them off. I do like a good baseball cap. The straw is perfect for the summer heat and sun. J.Crew and I have had kind of a rocky relationship throughout the years. But I always find myself grabbing a shirt or sweater every now and then. I really like the chambray workshirts they did this season. I grabbed the indigo and I've had my eye out for the white chambray. It's no secret I like new standard jeans. Although they could stand up by themselves when I first got them, they are breaking in amazingly. No washes yet. And no, they don't stink. I promise.

True Romance is certainly my favorite Tarantino film. I know he didn't direct it, but it his script. And it is amazing. Just look at the cast in the opening credits. Gary Oldman is a revelation in this film as Drexel. Hans Zimmer's soundtrack is spot on and the opening credit sequence is one of my favorites. Alabama's monologues are perfect bookends for the film. Beat for beat, this is my kind of movie.

I first saw this film in high school. I rocked the elvis sunglasses for a long time after this and still haven't found a girl who lists kung fu and Bruce Lee as turn-ons.

After a friend's art show my parents and I decided to stop by the local mall for some ice cream. Having a few new babies in the extended family always gives my mom a reason to just 'stop by' a few stores. So while they were in the baby gap, I decided to peruse the Gap to see if any of the raw selvage had trickled its way into middle america. No luck. Until I hear my dad say "These look a lot like those APC's you just got." My dad had found the one pair in the store. Apparently an internet return they just happen to be the right size. For 90 bucks, I couldn't pass up at least trying them out. Yes, my dad found them and he knows about APC. Maybe he should have this blog...

Like everyone else, I was curious to see how a $90 pair of denim compares to $155 denim. The fits are certainly different, with the APC being a bit slimmer with more of a taper than the Gap. I've worn the APCs for about two months now, so comparing the hand of the two jeans is a bit off. They both feel substantial-the Gap denim is not significantly lighter and I can't really tell if the weaves are very different. The conversation around these gap jeans has centered around how long they will last and if the construction is up to par. Not being an expert, it's hard to say. Generally details like construction take a few weeks to present themselves through wear and tear.

I guess only time will tell if there is a significant difference between 'premium' denim and denim for the teeming masses. Stay tuned for updates on both jeans. (I know you all are on the edge of your seats waiting to see what kind of whiskering takes place)

Anyone else going to the (capsule) show in New York? I'm thinking about going and it would be fun to put some faces to blogs and comments. The brand list looks pretty good. Personally I'm looking forward to checking out Garbstore, Post O'eralls, BillyKirk, Our Legacy, and Penfield. Whew. Talk about lions, and tigers, and bears.

Capsule seems to me the most user friendly tradeshow. All you have to do to get in is register online. So if you're thinking about checking out the show or will be in NYC around that time, drop me a line. We can silently check each other's clothes out over coffee or overpriced menswear.

The University of Chicago is my alma mater. I begrudgingly admit that it was a great fit for me. A bit of a quirky school, Chicago was home to the first sustained nuclear reaction as well as a hard earned tradition of bookishness and lack of fun. While the whole '...where fun comes to die...' thing is moderately true, I actually had quite a good time in Hyde Park. I know the Life photo archives are tried and true posting fodder, but I couldn't help myself.

These gates lead right into the quad. I quite like the onlooker's jacket.

I'm not exactly sure what the students are protesting against, perhaps nothing at all. All I know is that this placard sums up the general attitude of the typical UofC student.

Sigh. Chicago doesn't really have any sports teams. I know, I know, they exist, but not really. I didn't go to one game in 4 years. Although supposedly our team invented the shotgun offense. Instead of t-shirts proclaiming the number of Big 10 championships, the Chicago gift shop sells t-shirts bragging about how many Nobel laureates they have.

So if all you guys and girls are telling the truth when you say you love yourself a nerd, head to Hyde Park. It'll break you of that bad habit...

Maybe it's just me, but when it's 90 degrees out I seem to want to wear jackets and sweaters, and when it's 40 below I want a nice pair of seersucker shorts. These jackets have been calling my name. The only thing holding me back is I know if I bought them now, I'd end up being way too tempted to try and wear them. The only thing worse than sunglasses at night/indoors is wearing clothing that will give you heatstroke because it makes you look cool.

I've only seen a handful of fishtail parkas that I think could work. I found this one through Mono magazine. Mono is a Japanese magazine, so all I know about this jacket is it costs 14,490 yen and it's called the M-51 field parka. That and if she notices the fishtail it means she was checking out your rear end. Check it out here.

I have a moonstone jacket. I really like it because it's extremely light and really packable. It's perfect in a lot of situations. You can wear it as a middle layer underneath a shell or on it's own. I always end up wearing mine way too deep into the winter. It's a great 'sprint to the car from your front door or you'll die of hypothermia' jacket. Get it at your favorite camping/outdoor store. I like REI.

Saved the best for last. The boys over at h(y)r pointed this Albam jacket out. The madras print is sweet-just make sure it's a slimmer fit-a baggy fit with a print like this could lead people to confuse you for a couch. I love the hood too. I never really pull my hoods up, but I think a good hood always adds to your silhouette. I also have a sneaking suspicion that your girl would add this to her steal from your closet list. Katharine Hepburn is probably the quintessential American actress. Beautiful, intelligent, and fiercely independent, Hepburn is the embodiment of the modern woman. I always loved The Lion in Winter and her portrayal of Eleanor of Aquitaine. And who could forget her great love affair with Spencer Tracy? But forget all that. Simply stare at this picture. I dare you to find a better example of how to rock red hair. I love her eyes-no one raises an eyebrow the way Ms. Hepburn did.

She also was the prototype for the whole menswear on women style. So when your girl steals your blazer tell her she reminds you of Katharine Hepburn-I bet she smiles. Ms. Hepburn was the type of tomboy all guys dream about and all girls pretend to be.

I really like this shirt/jacket by Post Overalls. The Cruzer shirt could be worn as a single layer or as a lightweight jacket. I heard from a little birdy that girls like to steal their boyfriends' jackets and blazers to wear as oversized looks. If your girl stole this from your closet I bet all the hipsters in the world would hit on her...It's on sale at superdenim.

Chambray is a popular guy lately. This waistcoat by Kato is really nice. Plus, girls like guys who wear three piece suits and what not. Rock this over a nice white oxford and a good pair of chinos or denim- we can't all wear three piece suits around everywhere. Again, on sale at superdenim.

Of course I'm going to put the new standards on here. The color is dark enough to work with a chambray shirt (or vest) without looking too much like a texas tuxedo (or canadian tuxedo depending on which one you're closer to). Get them at the h(y)r store.

These Fracap mountaineering boots are awesome. Everybody's on the Red Wing tip, but for me, these would be the boots I'd buy. Get them at Oki-ni quick.

I've always had a soft spot for girls who wear scarves well. Like a headband (or any accessory really) scarves can go wrong really quickly. But the girl who rocks a scarf with an elephant wearing battle armor can't ever really go wrong, could she? It's summer so keep the scarf light-this one is linen and bamboo rayon. The other find from the army surplus store. An authentic parachute bag probably from the '60s. The unusual shape makes it stick out from duffles and other bags. Designed to have a parachute stuffed in it, this bag can hold a ton of crap.

I'd like to think that when I first saw the rain flap I thought about how practical it would be as an extra layer of protection against precipitation. But really, I just thought how cool the metal snaps look. Although it's nice to know your bag is rated for jungle warfare and high altitude conditions. You never know...

It's like a mega tote. I al ways look for bags that have handles/straps like this one. The handle itself wraps around the entire bag, which I think better distributes the weight. I'm a chronic over-stuffer: my slr, the point+shoot, a magazine or two, notebooks, my computer, etc., etc. so I need reinforced handles. I'm not advocating a bag this size for everyday use (although I could see girls rocking this-the straps would be big enough to throw over a shoulder), but I do see using it for traveling. Or stuffing it with treasures when I go shopping instead of collecting fancy paper bags.

Tote bags have been all the talk lately over on the leading men's wear blogs. Too girly? Not really all that practical? Everyone has their own take, but I think they're pretty useful. I can't really walk around with a backpack anymore-it just doesn't feel right. A messenger bag is useful, but sometimes the shape isn't always the best for carrying everything. A tote really can. I picked this up at my local army surplus store. It's actually a reproduction of a vintage pilot's helmet bag. Made of heavy duty canvas and metal zippers, this is a tough bag that I can pretty much fit anything into.

I like the external pockets on the one side. Large enough to fit a newspaper or a bottle of water without having to unzip the whole bag. So what do you guys think? Too girly for guys? Too big? More army surplus finds to come...

I love Clarks . There is nothing more comfortable than a crepe sole for walking through the city or taking a quick hike in the park. I have owned a lot of shoes, but I always go back to Clarks.

I started with the wu-wallabee. Everyone in the day rocked these, kids in catholic school to the guys that kicked in the brewsters. I blew out my last pair, so I don't currently own a pair, but whenever I get around to it, they will be in this color.

I owned a pair of luggers once. Every time I find a store that carries them, they aren't in my size. Everyone's been on the whole mocassin tip lately, but I like these more than quoddys.

Desert Treks are my favorite. I've been wearing my pair off and on for the past few years. The beeswax leather just gets better looking the more you wear it. Unlined and at a nice height, perfect for the summer. I plan on taking these to China at the end of this summer.

Arlo just posted a preview of gost's summer line. I'm really feeling the racing team tee. Because, really, you can't win them all. That and when I was little, my dad was really into cycling. He has a peugeot and he rode all the time.

The happy melancholy of Arlo's work really stands out in the t-shirt game. Maybe it's my inner misanthrope, but it always makes me smile.

Lauren and Catherine over at AsianCajuns are super stylish, super nice bloggers based out of Georgia. On top of great photography, the AsianCajuns are really good writers, which makes their blog a must read. Always handling my comments with grace and aplomb, I was quite surprised when they let me know they included me in a list of blogs they'd like to give an award to. When I started this thing I really never expected anyone to read it, let alone leave comments or give such kind words. So anyways, I really just want to say thanks so much. Trimmed with Gold Above - A great blog based out of L.A. I never have much luck finding anything on ebay, but Shaun has found (and posted) some awesome vintage stuff. Plus his spot checks on places in California have all been added to must-stops if I ever make it out to L.A.. His latest post on Le Labo (a fragrance shop) has me thinking I might need a personalized scent...

A Time To Get - Sticking with the L.A. theme for a moment, Nick's blog is another great read if you are into cool things. From cars, to stores, to clothes, to everything in between. Nick's wry take on things adds to his great photos. Why is it that he can take a better picture with his i-phone than I could with a D-90?

10 engines - James' blog is another great melange of coolness. Everything from apiary tips to waxed canvas trousers. I always find myself flipping through the site, finding new stuff all the time.

little thoughts - Yulanda's blog is really cool. Her sense of style is unique, and I love her photos. I don't really see any other pictures that look like hers.

honestly I could keep going and going, but really check out everyone on my sidebar- I check them every time they are updated. Each have a great perspective and something to say about all sorts of things, not just fashion. The only bad thing about reading all these blogs is that it'll make you feel incompetent.

Outside of Chinatown, Hyde Park is my favorite place in Chicago. Home to the University of Chicago, it's were I lived for four years. It's always a little strange coming back to Hyde Park for me. A mixture of nostalgia and a slight embarrassment always creeps over me when I hit the 47th street exit on Lakeshore drive. It instantly reminds me of who I was when I was 18 and who I am now. Sometimes I wonder what the 18 year old me would say if he saw me now. Without further existential angst, here's a few shots of my old haunts.

Chicago has a bar in the basement of one of the buildings called the Pub. My favorite thing about it is the hand-shuffleboard table. One of the best bar games around. The pace is slow enough to get in drinks and shit talking while feeding your inner competitiveness.

Like any good Chinese boy, my first stop in Chicago is always Chinatown. I love how no matter where I am, if there's a Chinatown I can go and feel something instantly familiar. I have family here and they always show me a great time. My favorite restaurant in Chicago's is Lee Wing Wah. You have to try the walnut shrimp, pea shoots, and wok-fried lobster. I tried to take pictures, but with 11 people and delicious food...let's just say it went quickly.

The aforementioned lobster. Stir-fried in a wok with ginger, it's quite delicious if shellfish is your thing.

If I ever lived in the Chicago area again it would certainly be on the south side. If it was good enough for Mr. Capone it's good enough for me. (my freshman dorm at chicago was a hotel he used to frequent) I've been a huge prohibition era buff from around 3rd or 4th grade on. I remember my parents took me on a 'mob' tour of chicago and from then on I was hooked. I knew all the hit men from Frank Nitty to Machine gun Kelly. And I always favored Capone's southside crew as opposed to Bugs Moran's northsiders. Who likes a northside hipster?

I'm headed down to Chicago to visit some family and take care of some business. I lived in Hyde Park for 4 years and am planning on a little photo safari through some of my old haunts. My family lives in Chinatown, so expect lots of food porn.

So before this blog turns into complete sycophancy, I promise I'll keep it cool on the praise for the h(y)r collective crew. But I really do think that if you're in the market for a shirt this season, THE oxford by h(y)r and Gitman Bros. is the one to get. Gitman Bros. are known for their quality and workmanship-they also make shirts for Thom Browne. I really like the high gusset on this cut. A higher gusset normally looks better when worn untucked. This shirt could easily become the shirt that never really leaves your rotation year-round. If funds were unlimited, I'd cop all 3 colorways. But if you put a gun to my head, I'd pick the gray. But it's a tough one between gray and red.

The best window into someone's sense of style is always in the details. For me, small subtle details are the way to go. The red contrast stitching on the back of the collar is so choice. Now, when you step in front of her to open the door she'll notice that you have discerning taste, and it may just make her smile.

Seriously, girls really like oxfords. I think. I'm pretty sure. A solid oxford may be the closest thing to girl-kryptonite. It's not going to completely win her over (even with kryptonite Lex Luthor never won), but it does make it that much more possible. And we could use all the help we can get.

Everyone's heard of the Life photo archive. It's a great resource and if you've been here before you know I love it too. One of my ultimate favorite online resources though, is the Library of Congress. The digital archives are amazing. You can find images, texts, all kinds of primary sources, for free and most are available for download. I have spent hours here and still am finding inspiration. This is one of my favorite finds:

Published in 1944, Born Free and Equal was Adams' address to the average American. A hope to give a face to what he called the 'broad concepts of American citizenship' and the human impact of the internment order. Largely ignored at the time, I still have yet to see this book get much press.

When I used to think of Ansel Adams, I never thought of portraiture. Now I do.

It's telling that the caption here is 'An American School Girl'. Adams' sensitivity comes through in his photography and his writing.

Snoozer Loser just released some awesome new accessories for the Summer. Although this quartz one is actually from their Spring collection, I still love it. I bet your girl would look pretty awesome rocking this with a simple white tee and some denim. And for 18 bucks, it's totally worth her smile, isn't it?

This Gypsy necklace is from the new line of accessories and is pretty dopeshow. I think girls like fringe necklaces, but I'm not sure. All I know is that any girl who likes this necklace probably has a cool dress to go with it.

This is by far my favorite piece of the new line. It's a pendant from the '60s designed to hold $2 in quarters. So cool.
This is the ideal 'just because' gift. Unique, pretty, and with a hint of whimsy. Just like her right?

It's no secret here that I'm a huge fan of h(y)rcollective and all they do. The daily blog is probably the best practical mens' wear blog out there. Ryan always presents wearable, relevant options at all sorts of price points. On top of it all, they have good taste.

The real highlight is THE magazine. Especially this edition. For sure a great read for anyone interested in fashion in general. The interview with the designers behind Ralph Lauren's Rugby line is really interesting. To hear designers' real feelings on blogs is certainly a must read. Another favorite was the feature on Red Wing shoes and a tour of their factory. I could go on and on.

Make sure to check it out for more info on THE duffel too. An interview with the designer as well as more insight into how the bag was created. There's only 25 of these beauts. So if you want one, you better move fast. For a limited edition,hand made bag, $300 bucks isn't so bad.

Also highlighted is THE oxford by Gitman Bros. This is the shirt you drop hints about around anyone who remotely may give you a present in the near future. Say you're out shopping with your girlfriend. You'll say things like: "You know what every guy needs? A good oxford. Which is hard to come by these days..." Then just trail off wistfully. A few hours later, at dinner, bring it up subtly again: "A solid oxford is the male equivalent of a little black dress. You can dress it up under a suit with a tie, or wear it with denim." If you don't think they're getting the hint, just hurry up and buy it yourself, they're gonna go quick too. For my two cents, this is the shirt to get this season.

I'm really excited to see that the h(y)r crew are opening a store and branching out into making product. It's good to see their focus is almost entirely on construction, materials, and usability. They are making stuff that you could keep for a long time. Jump over to their spot and let them know what you think.

They say the first step is admitting you have a problem. Here's exhibit A:

This is the bag that started it all. If it looks tiny, it is. This is my backpack from when I was very young. From around 1st grade through 5th. It was a quiver for my home made arrows, a game bag for when my buddies and I caught frogs and toads, and also my briefcase for school work. I quite like the maharishi style pattern. I wore this backpack everywhere. Ask my parents.

I used this bag almost all through undergrad. The plaid is a bit much, I admit, but I still like it a lot. If you look closely, you'll see a bottle opener at the bottom of the flap. Since it's made of wool, corduroy, and leather, it's a pretty sturdy bag. A good, medium sized bag for carrying all the crap I don't really need.

This is my newest acquisition. I picked it up at an Army Surplus in northern Michigan. I think it's Swiss or German. Lately, I've been toying with the idea of making a pannier out of it. I really like the metal and leather hardware.

I love the bottom of the bag. The metal feet are a great detail. Why don't more bags have feet like this? Think about all the gross places your favorite bag has been.

My family used to tease me that I had way too many sweaters and bags for my own good. Perusing my stash, yes, they are right. How I know I have a problem? I know I have too many and I still want more. The guys over at H(y)r Collective aren't making things any easier. Although ryan has been a little coy with us, from what I can glean, THE collection by (y) is looking like a heater. Their first preview is this duffel. Sourced almost entirely in Vancouver, the duffel is hand made by Tannis Hegan with 10 oz. canvas, brass hardware, and leather straps. I always liked jazz-it's one of the highlights of American culture. I think a big part of it was the fact that the musicians were always so cool. The way they made it seem effortless made it all even better. I got into jazz even more after a few Blue Note compilations that featured their most sampled material. Come for the sick style, stay for the amazing music.

Thelonious. No one rocks a beard better. Makes me want to take up the piano again.

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. One of the coolest band names ever. One of my favorite drummers. Nothing like a crisp white shirt and a great tie.

I don't think you can write about jazz and its sartorial influence without at least mentioning Mr. Davis. Iconic photograph for an iconic individual. I think the most important thing you can glean from these fellows is always be yourself and never try too hard.

On monday, barney's co-op had a 40% off sale on pretty much their entire inventory. The first thing I thought of: a.p.c. new standards. APC rarely goes on sale. Their denim never does and for a good reason. It's probably some of the best denim your money can buy. It comes highly recommended by bloggers and random hipsters alike. I was never really into the raw denim thing (only because of my pocketbook), but I jumped at the chance to get a pair of new standards for under 100 bucks. Now I don't think I'll ever go back. So if you see me this summer, I'll most likely be wearing these jeans.

A few sites suggest sizing down a few inches to allow for stretch. I bought mine pretty much at my exact size-there would be no way I could bear stretching out a pair that were a few inches too small. Plus, I don't really rock my denim very tight. I haven't had a lot of experience with 'quality' denim but honestly, these are best fitting jeans I've owned.

So it's May and the weather is getting warmer. Allegedly. Late spring/early summer is really my favorite time of the year. It's also time to step your game up if you have a girlfriend. Nice weather equals more walking around time. More walking around time equals more reasons to get her a good dress. Keep it lightweight. Probably unlined.

It's no secret that mall powerhouses like the Gap and J.Crew were, for a little while, well, a little bland. I never really was into the Gap brand (especially after they murdered banana republic-remember when it was all Hemingway and safari?) and J.Crew was a popular choice in high school. Both brands have recently shown signs that they are really stepping their games up. J. Crew with redwing collaborations and a refocus on quality material (selvage chambray shirts for $98 anyone?). Now the Gap brings us a resurgence of their '1969' premium denim line. Normally this means expensive jeans that aren't really much different than their regular line. Not so this time you jaded hipster. Medium-weight raw selvage denim? For around 60 bucks? 60 bucks?! Check out men's style for more info on the new denim.

For some bloggers out there, it's no secret that I lament the dearth of diffusion lines for men. H&M, topshop, uniqlo, etc. all normally have a whole slew of pretty cool designers for their womens' collections. But now I'm happy us guys don't get the same treatment. I'd rather get raw denim, quality linen, chambray, and other materials at my mall stores. I think if that's what qualifies as 'disposable' fashion for men, then I can't really complain, can I?

So I was perusing my favorite blogs after the Tigers' game today and Indigo&Cloth pointed me towards this interview with Steven Alan on fashionista. Cool things I learned: Mr. Alan does a lot. Steven Alan makes good shirts. Although a tad rich for my blood, I always keep an eye out for a good sale (like the one a little birdy told me about at barney's co-op on Monday). I dare you to find a better madras out there. The reverse-stitching thing is cool, but really I'm all about the tailoring and the patterns. Slightly slimmer fitting, these shirts look good with denim or a suit. My pick is the madras, although you can never go wrong with a good solid plaid. I say always opt for the long sleeve and roll it up.

American workwear has no doubt had a resurgence in popularity lately. Much of that popularity has to do with Japanese designers helping reinterpret and repackage classic Americana-think Daike Suzuki and Engineered Garments.

In a refreshing take, Shigoto Fashion brings us their version of classic Japanese workwear. Inspired by the centuries old workwear of Japanese construction workers, Shigoto has sourced quality hand woven fabrics to create their wares. Made in Okyama, Japan.

Although the silhouette of the traditional Tobi pant is a bit much for me, these Niji slim cut pants are a great look, especially if you ride a bike a lot. The gathered leg would keep your pants away from your chain and the roomy thighs would keep you comfortable. The fabric and color would look great with a nice oxford and ivy cap.

The split-toe Matsuri Tabi shoes are my favorite offering from Shigoto. In a sea of moccasins and Red Wing boots, these would be a nice alternative. I've read articles about how splitting the toe is actually more comfortable for long periods-the thought being the foot is naturally split along the toe. I would love to see how these shoes fit and perform.

Everyone needs a good bag. Canvas is probably the best natural material ever. Many thanks to A Continuous Lean for pointing out Beckel Canvas Products. Based out of Portland, Oregon Beckel makes really cool stuff. Everything from tents to tote bags and all of it at really reasonable prices. I think as bloggers we can get desensitized to price points, but really you can't beat a tote bag for twenty bucks. Especially 100% American made-buy one and help the economy!

I see a lot of dudes rocking totes on the old interwebs. But I bet your girl would like it a whole lot too. All you diy-ers could go to town on the blank canvas.

Every guy needs a good duffel. Great for a weekend getaway or smuggling top secret codes on the Orient Express.

This is my favorite of the bunch. Called the 'briefcase' I like that it zips closed, that way I don't have to worry about rain or pickpockets.

A.P.C. brought the heat for their Spring/Summer collection for sure. I really want this suit. The grey is spot on and the slim fit is a nice change, especially for a summer suit. I don't know if it's lined or not, I'm hoping not-it would be so much more comfortable once the humidity starts to rise.

So at dinner tonight, my parents handed me this book and that first edition Franny and Zooey I was pining over. Amazing. I was nervous just holding the books.

I would've scanned the Franny&Zooey but I didn't want to bend the spine. I'm really excited to read these stories, I haven't read them before. It's such a treat to be able to see the trajectory of an author through unpublished work. I'm not sure if anyone has ever captured feeling lost in the world much better than Salinger and for my money there isn't better dialogue out there. For me, reading Salinger's work was a watershed moment. The ease it seemed to be written with, the pathos that his characters engender, all made me want to read more. Not just of his work, but more books in general.

Anyways, to sum it all up; I don't deserve my parents. Good birthday for sure.

27. It sounds older when you say it out loud. No big plans. But if you want to get me something, you could get me this Wings+Horns trench. They have it over at Blackbird. I've been looking for a nice spring coat. I was torn between a traditional mac or a trench. This seems like a nice balance, although it leans way towards the mac. Really, I'm just looking for a nice single breasted, unlined, mid-length coat for April showers and the occasional summer thunderstorm. Any suggestions?

Ever since I first heard this song, particularly nas' verse, (circa 1996) I promised myself I would listen to it the day I turned twenty. I've listened to the song the morning of every birthday since. Seven years after 20 and I still like the song. Nas always made me want to live in New York City.
